Hello

Dropped a small screwdriver on the mainboard, it hit EC, on the bottom side was this drive. After that it no longer mounts or boot, but it was still detected in OS with full size - only unallocated.
Then, during diagnose, made a short somewhere and also drive did not recognized anymore at all. After made a short I lost 1.8V on R10, does it mean the MSP430 is gone?

For reference here is what I gathered:

anybody out there having a chip or dump of MA01 fw ? the drive came from some asus laptop.
M25P16 is damaged

both RAU and TPS22920x taken off, TPS are identical, one RAU has lower resistance in SW pin. 5505 and MSP430 off, 3.3V went from 6 to 3 ohm. started to worry about NAND. then applied 3.3V and about 300mA goes and 88ss9189 heats up.
marvell down, 3.3V goes into kiloohms - NAND appears OK. and looks like MSP430 also survived, but need to compare it better than just VCC
parts ordered, some already shipped few days ago

with some help on hddguru a progress has been made

M25P16 with only 13ohm on VCC was getting hot, but still detected and most of the data looked good



now it was figured out first (most damaged) block is the same as BOOT block at 0x40000 (backup), the two coruppted tables have about 100 or less bytes of difference when compared multiple dumps.

if someone have any kind of micron/crucial dump from disk with 88ss9189 cpu please share here (or in private message)

flashed new BIOS with what was recovered, in short, drive starts it's detected but with same messages as before. as there have been attempts already to do secure erase, it is probably fooled now and 100% working BIOS would not help anyway.

it can be fixed with JTAG, but need to map pins first somehow, and the question now is what voltage levels 88ss9189 is working at on JTAG port ?

should i use level shifter or 3.3V is safe ?

this was last serial log, i thought it won't get to this point after restoring copy of initially flashed dump (which did not contain additions to bad block table that the drive automatically made on first boot attempt after repair), at least SATA did not work and wasn't visible in linux

who can tell the cause of the line 11 garbled like this?

during BIOS changing, something went dead, 0.92V test point became 0.64V (exact pin on controller has 83Kohm/0.97V on working drive 87Kohm on this one), several pins on MSP430 left unpowered

i had to make a basic schematic so you can understand better what is going on

after each soldering attempt i do always check main power resistances and one thing caught my attention here, a 3.3VOUT kinda following 1.8VOUT resistance, while hot they were identical, and when device cooled down they were identical. the reason i did not pay much attention to this in the beginning was that on 2.5" drive 3.3VOUT was also around 70Kohm.

you would thought it is a short, but direct measurement between the two paths gave over 100Kohm (did not remember the value)

another way to confirm it is to measure drive before and after connecting to host (or in this case m2 to 2.5" adapter) because of a way it is designed, 3.3VIN will no longer 'charge' but it settles at static value (depending on host, on this adapter it is 0.9K directly in laptop is 3K)

so 3.3VIN goes to 0.9Kohm and both 3.3VOUT and 1.8VOUT go to around 70Kohm

all chips have been taken down and reballed, i know NAND sit properly because i dialed all lines from NAND on CPU before soldering CPU, and then dialed DRAM pins of the CPU before soldering DRAM so i knew CPU sit well too, so the first thing to check is take off DRAM

3.3VOUT went to 25-30Kohm and stayed like that, i did not think this is correct and expected the device to either burn or not start, but everything was still the same, except one thing - 3.3VOUT voltage - it was no longer in the insane 3.38-3.4V range, went down to 3.3-3.32V

what really happened here? was there a short under DRAM ? 3.3VOUT had 3.4V when drive failed first time 4y ago and i did not solder anything yet. i bought it as refurbished from USA on ebay they did not want to say much about it but it looks like it was repaired before (OEM sticker looked original, [цензура] the sticker everyone can make it)

now i have 4 cases here in diagram
1. drive not connected to anything
2. drive connected to m2/2.5" adapter
3. drive not connected to anything after DRAM reball
4. drive connected to m2/2.5" adapter after DRAM reball

now it seems to me the same type of issue still exist on 1.8VOUT, as the resistance decreases when inserted into some kind of slot, while all other power paths remain at the same values as out of slot

can anyone explain this?

GND plane under the MSP430 is losing connection to the rest of GND on the board, possibly some other shit in the layers as well which explain unexpected resistance/voltage changes.
the PCB was repaired before that is for sure, when it came it was already bent a little, and while reballing NAND, one of the two chips after removal was black under like it was boiled in some sort of grease - managed to clean with iso
they did not repair it properly resulting in controller and bios burning, otherwise converters should get hit protecting rest of the circuit (as the screwdriver was dropped it could very well be that the mechanical stress caused damage, at least EC works and the m2 slot in the same laptop is used with another disk without problems)
