Hi everyone,
I'm currently troubleshooting a Gigabyte G5 KC laptop (Motherboard Model: Clevo 6-71-NH5P0-D02).
The Problem: The dedicated GPU (Nvidia) is dead - I suspect a hard short circuit (chết chạm). I have basic soldering skills and have already tried to electrically isolate the GPU by disconnecting its power sources (lifting inductor coils), but the laptop still exhibits a specific symptom:
I power on the laptop.
It runs for approximately 3 minutes.
After exactly 3 minutes, the fans suddenly ramp up to 100% speed (very loud).
A few seconds later, the laptop shuts down completely.
What I have tried so far:
Software/Driver: Tried to disable the dGPU via Device Manager (Windows) and blacklist Nouveau/Nvidia (Linux). The shutdown still happens, leading me to believe it's a hardware-level thermal or power protection trigger.
Hardware (Power Disconnect): I located the main power inductors (coils) near the Nvidia GPU chip. I desoldered and lifted one leg of the main Vcore coil(s) to ensure the GPU chip itself is not drawing current. Despite this, the 3-minute shutdown persists.
My Question / Request for Advice: What other circuits related to the dGPU could be causing this shutdown?
Could there be auxiliary voltages (like PEX_VDD, 1.8V, or 3.3V standby) that are still feeding the GPU or being shorted?
Are there specific MOSFETs or power management ICs (for the GPU) that I need to remove or disable to stop the motherboard from detecting a fault?
Has anyone worked on a Clevo NH5x board before and knows exactly which components to remove to fully disable the Nvidia graphics and run on iGPU only?
I suspect the shutdown is triggered by the EC (Embedded Controller) sensing an overcurrent condition or a missing power good signal from the GPU power rail, causing it to kill the main power.
Any schematics, board views, or advice on exactly which components to remove (coils, MOSFETs, or even the GPU itself) would be greatly appreciated.
I am aiming to turn this into a permanent iGPU-only machine for basic use.
Thank you in advance for your help!
